The TIAA-CREF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence is named in honor of Reverend Hesburgh, C.S.C., president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame and former member of the TIAA- CREF Board of Overseers for 28 years.

Father Hesburgh is considered one of the most influential figures in higher education in the 20th century, revered for his work on a wide range of social issues and his outstanding leadership qualities. He led Notre Dame as president for 35 years. The first person from highe r education to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, Father Hesb urgh also received the Meda l of Freedom , the nation’s highest civilian honor. Now 91 years old, he has held 16 presidential appointments and served four popes.

The TIAA-CREF Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence recognizes a current college or university president or chancellor who embodies the spirit of Father Hesburgh, his commitment to higher education and his contributions to the greater good. The award is administered by the TIAA-CREF Institute and presented at the annual meeting of the American Council on Education.

GRAHAM SPANIER 2009 TIAA-CREF THEODORE M. HESBURGH AWARD WINNER

Dr. Spanier has served the public through an academic career that has spanned 36 years, including 32 years in university administration. Trained as a family sociologist, demographer and marriage and family therapist, Dr. Spanier has a deep commitment to social justice and the power of scholarly inquiry to transform society. On a national level, Dr. Spanier has been able to influence dialogue on the need for our universities to more fully engage with the communities they serve and the nation at large.

Graham Spanier was appointed Penn State’s 16th president in 1995. President Spanier served as chair of the Association of American Universities and chairs the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board. He is a member of the National Counterintelligence Working Group, the Board of Advisors of the Naval Postgraduate School and the board of Junior Achievement Worldwide. A distinguished researcher and scholar, he has written more than 100 scholarly publications and was the founding editor of The Journal of Family Issues.

Within academe, Dr. Spanier has focused on “humanizing the university,” “student centeredness” and the “integration of teaching, research and service.” His vision and exceptional leadership skills have had a global impact and his energy, optimism and good humor have created an “unconventional” approach to the modern university presidency.

The bank expects to open its first Rhode Island location in Barrington, Bristol County, later this year, and plans to expand throughout the state. TD Bank's current footprint comprises 12 states throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and Florida, as well as the District of Columbia.

The bank also announced today that Robert A. Kolb has been named market president for TD Bank in Rhode Island. He will oversee the growth and expansion of all business lines for the bank's operations in Rhode Island. Kolb has 28 years of banking experience and currently serves as market president for TD Bank's Central and Western Massachusetts markets. A resident of South Kingstown, R.I., Kolb serves on the boards of the Business Improvement District of Springfield, Mass., and the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce in Western Massachusetts.

Supporting Kolb in Rhode Island will be Louise J. Trottier, senior vice president retail banking. Trottier will manage retail sales and service within the market. Presently, Trottier oversees TD Bank's retail banking operations in Northeastern, Central, and Western Massachusetts. Trottier has 34 years of banking experience and has been a member of the TD Bank team since 1996.
